Which aluminum alloy is best suited for a racecar chassis?
I've worked with plenty of aluminum alloys before, but I'm just curious to find other peoples' opinions on which alloy would be the best for building a lightweight racecar frame.
The considerations to keep in mind are: low weight, high strength, good weldability, good shock absorption for rough road racing.
It's not for a high-torque engine so chassis twisting will not be an issue.
I'm favoring 6061 alloy at the moment because I built an aircraft frame with it and it's pretty strong, but I haven't worked with everything, so let me know what you think (and why)!

You really can't go wrong with 6061, although some have use 6063 which is also weldable. For 6061 I would use T6 unless you have a need for a lot of elongation, then T4. But I strongly suggest T6 temper.
Alloys 7075 and 2024 are not weldable using arc welding. They are very susceptible to stress corrosion cracking.
They require more exotic welding techniques such as EB, laser or friction stir.
