Customs import tax and duty fee?
I am importing products from Asia to Ireland, do customs charge you vat and duties based on what the products are worth in the shop or what i paid for them? what is the procedure there??? I am importing make up ect not huge amounts maybe 10 pieces of each and about 50 packs of mach 3 razors.. to stock up on lol beats buying them over here were you pay an arm and a leg and two fingures for stuff! any advice people?? My total order came to 350 euro.. approx 500 dollars.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Excise Roulette. Anything can happen depending upon the courier chosen at the point of Dispatch, items purchased and Customs declaration made by the seller.
Customs charge is based on the value entered on the export sheet filled in by the seller. Now this can work in two ways if the person enters the full correct amount of the value then you are charged at the current applicable rate of exchange and VAT rate on that amount. If the seller states on the export sheet that the item/s are a gift, then no VAT will be charged... UNLESS, they open the package and then find out that this is not a gift, then everyone goes to jail!
If your seller has selected a standard state postal company to send your items, then it is likely that it will be sent to Ireland's clearing hub and handled by your similar company which will withhold delivery until full duty is paid (plus a bung to them for telling you that you need to pay them for doing their job- Sometimes called a clearing fee).
Alternatively, your seller may have enlisted a private world-wide courier to take your items and the chances of having to pay customs UP FRONT vanishes altogether, however, you may (This is far less likely if one private courier has handled it all the way) still be supplied with a VAT invoice from your Customs but that is it.
